Prohibition of “name collision”
- It cannot be “identical” to:
  ✅ Registered company (e.g. “XX Limited”)
  ✅ Government agencies (e.g. “Hong Kong Tourism Board”)
  → For example, if you want to use “Hong Kong Disneyland Limited”, but there is already a company with the same name, it will be rejected.
Illegal or bad names are prohibited
- Involved in a crime (e.g. a mafia trading company). ❌
- Vulgar or offensive (e.g., foul language❌
  → The Commissioner has the power to veto such names directly.
These terms need to be applied for first
- If the name contains sensitive words, for example:
  ✦ “Bank”, “Insurance”, “University” (subject to government approval)
  ✦ “China”, “Country”, “Hong Kong Government” (easily misleading and related to the authorities)
  → Supporting documents are required to explain the purpose and be approved for use.
Have you ever been forced to change your name? It can’t be used directly!
- If a name has been changed in the past by a government request (e.g., someone else complains of infringement),
  No re-registration is allowed unless a new application is granted and approved.

Chinese name requirements for Hong Kong companies

Mandatory use of Chinese Traditional
✅ Traditional Chinese characters are required: According to the Companies Ordinance and the Companies Registry’s guidelines, the Chinese name of a local company registered must be in Chinese Traditional, and simplified Chinese characters are not accepted.
→ For example, if you want to use Longteng Trading Co., Ltd. (Simplified Dragon), you must change it to Traditional Longteng Trading Co., Ltd.
Simplified Chinese direct rejection
❌ If the submitted name contains simplified Chinese characters (e.g. “华” instead of “华”, “東” instead of “東”), the Registry will reject the application directly and the correct traditional name will need to be submitted again.
